High-accuracy radio positioning and sensing in industrial environments

5G NR technology and particularly the deployments at the millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands with large channel bandwidths and highly direction antenna systems allow for high-accuracy radio positioning and radio-based sensing or radar like functionalities. In this work, we have developed now concepts and algorithm solutions that together with concrete performance evaluations in the context of industrial sites (harbors, factories) demonstrate the feasibility of reaching centimeter-level positioning and sensing accuracies. Such methods allow for increased location awareness in advanced industrial systems, thus enhancing the efficiency and safety of the industrial facility. Location-awareness can also be leveraged to improve the efficiency and reliability of handovers in industrial systems with macro mobility.
